Experience

Dear learner, My name is Jan (John) Macha, and I am a certified 8th grade Language Arts teacher. I have tutored for the last 11 years, first as an au pair in Germany, the UK, and finally here in the United States. I have worked with children of various ages from first grade all the way to high school. For the last 8 years, four times a week, I have been tutoring my 8th grade students. Additionally, once a week my colleague and I run a writer’s workshop, a type of tutoring for the students who desire to develop further in writing. As a middle school teacher of English, I enjoy tutoring because, unlike in a traditional classroom setting, I get to focus solely on one or two students the entire time of the session. This allows for much faster growth and much greater results. Moreover, I really get to know the students and vice versa. As a result, the tutored student is typically more open to help, suggestions, and challenge in order to work harder on his or her writing, reading, speech, or any other discipline of English. In 2014, I was given Teacher of the Year Award at Soehl Middle School in Linden, New Jersey. Additionally, in the same year, I was presented with the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award and Teachers That Make Magic Award. Lastly, this year, I was selected as a model classroom teacher by the State Turnaround Coach, RAC 3. As a former ESL student and an English teacher, I have a unique understanding of grammar, reading, and writing since I had to learn it all from scratch, so to speak. My English language foundation was laid through the Cambridge University ESL program that I studied for three years in the United Kingdom and successfully earned all three ESL certificates. In closing, you and I both know that being proficient in English is a must in today’s communication-centered world. But what if I proved to you that this subject is not only fun, but that you can actually be good at it? Many of my students tell me that they used to hate Language Arts until they had me as a teacher, which changed their perspective on English forever. Contact me and find out for yourself why so many of my students have changed their mind about English along with their grades. Very Truly, Jan Macha
